UPDATED with pictures - Media Invite: Celebrating ten years of Corby station

  • Date: Friday 22nd February
  • Time: From 8:30am
  • Venue: Corby Station

East Midlands Trains will be celebrating ten successful years of Corby station this month.

The station opened its doors on 23 February 2009 with a service of one train per day to and from London, with a full hourly service starting on 27 April 2009 that included the great addition of a new through service to and from Melton Mowbray.

Since then, the station has seen in excess of 2.3 million journeys on its train services.

As part Midland Main Line Upgrade programme, from December 2020, the service will be doubled to two trains per hour between Corby and London St Pancras (in both directions) and the line will be electrified.

Media are invited to join Lawrence Bowman, Commercial Director of East Midlands Trains, Ed Akers, Senior Sponsor from Network Rail and Corby MP Tom Pursglove as well as other Corby station supporters to celebrate the 10 year anniversary. There will be #EMTreats cupcakes for passengers and a cake cutting at 08.30 along with an opportunity for photographs and interviews.

Lawrence Bowman, Commercial Director for East Midlands Trains said: “Corby station is valued greatly by its community and it will be a pleasure to celebrate alongside local passengers on Friday 22 February.

“The station has grown in popularity over the last ten years and with the completion of electrification in December 2020 will see services to and from London doubled. We hope that our passengers will continue to enjoy travelling through the station for business and leisure”.

David Fursdon, Corby Rail User and long term supporter of the station said: "There can be no doubt the reopening of Corby Railway Station has boosted the town’s ongoing regeneration and given Corby citizens access to the greater UK rail network.

“A number of improvements have been made in the past ten years with the reinstatement of a second track between Corby and Kettering and ongoing electrification work bringing greener journeys and a half hourly service from December 2020.

“There is much to look forward too with all the investment going in to the Corby rail service and I am sure this will all be of great benefit to the town in many ways"

Ed Akers, Senior Sponsor for Network Rail, said: “This will be a fantastic celebration and we are delighted to be a part of it. As part of the Midland Main Line Upgrade, which is the biggest investment into the line since the Victorian era, Network Rail is carrying out a huge amount of work to the railway in Corby.

“This includes the electrification of the line between London and Kettering and Corby via Bedford which will improve journeys for all customers travelling in this area and provide a more modern and reliable railway for years to come. We have also begun work to extend a platform at the station, which will allow longer trains with more seats, providing more comfortable journeys.”

Steve Jones, Secretary - East Midlands Branch for Railfuture said: “The reopening of the line to Corby in 2009 was a major development in the East Midlands rail network. Corby was one of the largest towns in Britain without a rail service, so the return of regular trains was very welcome.  Not only that; the town gained an impressive new station and a high-quality through service to and from London.  These have become well established over the past ten years and have played a major part in Corby’s recovery and renewal after the loss of its traditional industries. Now with electrification well under way, we look forward to the next phase for Corby’s rail service.”
