Spalding station building heritage works complete
- East Midlands Trains worked with Railway Heritage Trust and Network Rail on restoration project
- Works included; restoration of windows, floorboards and ceilings
- Future accessibility improvements also planned
East Midlands Trains has invested nearly £95,000 to improve the appearance of the Grade II listed building at Spalding railway station in Lincolnshire.
Working with the Railway Heritage Trust, East Midlands Trains reinstated the windows, interior floorboards and ceilings to ensure the building is weather tight. With this investment now complete, there is potential for retail units to be opened for passengers and the local community.
Later this year, Network Rail will start work to improve accessibility at the station as part of a £2.5million investment. New lifts will be installed which will provide step-free access to platform two as well as tactile paving, additional CCTV cameras and improved lighting on the footbridge. This project is expected to be completed early next year.
East Midlands Trains will also be making improvement works to the car park, renewing the white lining and revising the disabled parking location.
Duncan Cale, General Manager - East, East Midlands Trains said: “Now the buildings at Spalding have been restored, it has greatly improved the overall look and feel for our passengers who use the station regularly”.
Andy Savage, Executive Director, Railway Heritage Trust, said: “We are delighted to have been able to help fund the restoration of the previously abandoned sections of the station, and to help make its appearance look so much better.
“We look forward to working with industry and local parties to bring the unused areas of the station into suitable commercial or community use.’
Ben Hamilton, Project Manager, Network Rail said: “This is a fantastic project which will really improve passenger experience at the station.
“We are looking forward to beginning work to improve accessibility at the station later this year, which will open up travel opportunities and make using the station much easier.”
