From bell bottoms to bus stops: How over-60s are re-discovering freedom, fun and friendships

  • Britian’s over-60s are embracing a ‘second adolescence’, with 22% discovering new hobbies thanks to their free bus pass.
  • 42% say free bus travel gives them the opportunity to visit family and friends more often.
  • 56% cite avoiding the hassle and cost of parking as a key reason for choosing the bus.

Britain’s over-60s are frequently stereotyped by society as an ‘ageing generation’. However, new research shows this couldn’t be further from the truth – revealing that, in fact, this generation is embracing a ‘second adolescence’.

Today’s over-60s are the punk-loving, legwarmer-adoring, 80s-rooted rebels at heart, who are now starting to rediscover old hobbies and reconnect with loved ones – all while leaving the car at home.

The findings from Stagecoach, the UK’s largest bus and coach operator, show that free bus travel is giving over-60s the freedom, affordability and flexibility to make the most of their free time.

A gateway to new adventures

According to the research, today’s over-60s have more time and energy than ever – and they’re channelling it into spending time with friends and family (28%), discovering new hobbies (22%) and reigniting passions from their youth (19%).

But while they’re embracing life today, they’re also still carrying a sense of nostalgia for their youth – with 45% recognising the 1970s as the best years of their lives, and 29% pining after the 80s. Both decades associated with memorable social lives and shared experiences.

And now, they’re using their free travel pass to reconnect with those feelings.

Bringing people closer together

Free bus travel isn’t just about leisure, it’s also about strengthening communities and reducing isolation. In fact, the research uncovers the powerful societal impact free bus travel is having on this generation – with 42% saying it gives them the opportunity to visit family and friends more often, over a third (36%) feeling more connected to their local community and over one in five (22%) saying it’s helping them to discover new interests.

And all of this is helping them to reconnect with their love for their ‘golden decades’, with almost half (44%) admitting the bus makes them feel reminiscent of their childhood.

Reducing travel cost and stress

Nearly half (48%) of this generation say free bus travel is enabling them to leave the car at home more often and ditch the costly taxis altogether (25%).

Over and above the obvious cost savings, more than half (56%) say the main reason they would choose to travel by bus is the fact it takes away worries and anxiety around parking.

Encouraging take-up

The research shows 65% of over-60s have already claimed their free bus pass and are enjoying the travel freedom it brings – with a further 7% planning to apply for theirs soon.

However, 5% are missing out – unaware they’re eligible for the free perk.

Stagecoach is now encouraging all over-60s to check their eligibility and claim their free ticket to embrace their ‘second adolescence’.

Debra Goodwin, Chief Customer Officer at Stagecoach, said:

“It’s fantastic to see how much value over-60s place on concessionary bus travel,” explains Debra. “From reconnecting with family and friends to rediscovering hobbies and cultural experiences, free travel is helping people make new memories and enjoy life to the fullest.”
