Climate Transition Plan published: setting out route to Net Zero

Stagecoach has published its Climate Transition Plan, setting out how the business will build on its progress towards a more sustainable future and deliver its ambition to achieve a 100% zero-emission bus fleet by 2035 and net-zero operations by 2050.

Stagecoach has published its Climate Transition Plan, setting out how the business will build on its progress towards a more sustainable future and deliver its ambition to achieve a 100% zero-emission bus fleet by 2035 and net-zero operations by 2050.

The plan outlines how Stagecoach will work with government, local authorities, suppliers, investors and other partners to accelerate the transition to net zero, while supporting the people and communities it serves.

Stagecoach has invested more than £500m in electric buses and charging infrastructure since 2021. At the end of FY26, more than 1,500 electric buses were operating across its fleet, representing nearly 19% of the total.

The company remains focused on accelerating the transition to zero-emission buses, supported by ambitious, science-based targets.

But the Climate Transition Plan recognises that sustainability is about more than reducing emissions.

It sets out Stagecoach’s wider commitments to the health and wellbeing of its people and communities, diversity, equity and inclusion, and supporting thriving communities and economies across the UK.

The plan also recognises the connections between climate, society, nature and biodiversity, and the role Stagecoach can play through its everyday operations and broader community partnerships.

Sam Greer, Stagecoach CEO, said:

“Stagecoach sits at the heart of UK communities and we have an important role to play in tackling some of the biggest challenges facing our planet.

“Bus travel is vital to reducing carbon emissions while keeping people connected to the places they live, work and visit. Our strategy is clear: to reduce our carbon footprint while continuing to make a positive contribution to the communities we serve.

“Our Climate Transition Plan is an important milestone in our decarbonisation journey. It reflects our shared responsibility to deliver a net-zero future and recognises the important connections between climate, society, nature and biodiversity.

“Sustainability is embedded in the decisions we make across our business, and this plan will help ensure we remain focused on delivering the targets we have set ourselves.”

Stagecoach’s commitment to sustainability is long-standing. In 2023, it became the first UK bus operator to participate in the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.

Its sustainability roadmap covers the full range of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) priorities and is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Through the Climate Transition Plan, Stagecoach will continue working with its partners to reduce emissions, support its people and communities, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
